Description:
What is the appeal of Puerto Rican music? This ambitious work uncovers the history of the island's music, which until now has not been widely discussed. There is no end to the fascinating music that has been introduced to the world from this small island with a population of 3.6 million. Furthermore, community-based music such as salsa and boogaloo have also emerged from the Puerto Rican immigrant neighborhoods centered in New York City. However, the history of such Puerto Rican music has never been discussed in depth. Perhaps this is because most of the musicians of the salsa era were of Puerto Rican descent, but the music they were doing was often based on Cuban music. But maybe it was because the times have turned around, and as we enter the 21st century, people are beginning to pay attention to old-time Puerto Rican music, such as Mark Anthony's cover of Rafael Hernandez's classic "Borinquen Lament," which is a great classic. In the field of books, research books that tackle Puerto Rican music head-on have been published as if at the top of their lungs. While referring to such books, this album tackles the history of the island's music head-on, making full use of old sound sources that were about to be forgotten. From the rare SP recordings of "Danza," which is said to be the first national music of Puerto Rico, to the superb boleros composed by Rafael Hernandez and Pedro Flores, who were influenced by Cuban music but have created their own unique musical style. The program also features a variety of rare/important sound sources, such as the beautiful voices of famous singers from "Puerto Rico, the Island of Song," and rare rural hibaro music. We have tried to include as many of the island's best-known songs as possible in this collection, keeping in mind that this is the first time you are hearing this field of music. We hope you will enjoy the mature charm of Puerto Rican music, which is more profound and refined than Cuban music. Of course, since this is a Disco Lópezia release, the booklet is as usual full of detailed explanations and rare photos. The mastering is also superb. Music selection and commentary by Katsunori Tanaka
