In the 19th century, Goethe, in his later years, found his utopia in the new land of America. A century later, European composers fled war and came to America in droves, contributing to the development of Hollywood's film music. The most successful of these was probably Korngold. His Violin Concerto is a fusion of the late Romantic style and his own film music motifs, and although it was ridiculed as "outdated" at the time of its premiere, it was loved by the master Heifetz and is a much-loved masterpiece today. Following Korngold, the Hungarian composer Roja achieved great success in the field of film music. His Violin Concerto was also commissioned by Heifetz, but unlike Korngold, who was nostalgic for tradition, Roja's work is avant-garde in its approach, as if challenging the limits of classical music, and is colorful and full of Hungarian folk music elements. The two pieces are contrasted by Bernstein's "Serenade," a violin concerto in the form of a violin concerto. This is a unique piece with a unique instrumentation that is not limited to the format of a violin concerto, and is truly a symbol of contemporary America.It is also surprising that the compositional dates of these pieces differ by only about 15 years.
