Description:
Following "City Pop and Beyond," which vividly unraveled the roots of the genre, the second volume is now complete! This time, we focus on female artists and fill in the pieces that make up the triangle, focusing on songs that pay homage to them. City Pop is in the midst of a global boom, and where will the music that can be seen beyond it go? This disc attempts to delve into the roots of the works of female singers around "Happi End/Tin Pan Alley," the source of the city pop that has become a worldwide movement. The three singers I chose were Cilia Paul, Yumi Arai (Matsutoya), and Mariya Takeuchi. I selected the songs with these three artists in mind, since they were once very active in the heyday of city pop and performed songs that paid homage to oldies, and two of them have released a number of straight-ahead oldies covers. First, the first half of Disc-1 is devoted mainly to numbers from the album "Yume de Aitara" produced by Eiichi Otaki, which was the original song of the album, starting with M-2, which gave a great hint to the birth of the rare classic "Yume de Aitara".The latter half of the album is a compilation of songs that influenced Yumi's music, including M-14, which is a direct response to "Chinese Soup," known for its cover by Minako Yoshida and Tomoyo Harada, and M-15, which contributed to the world view of "Rouge no Dengon (Rouge's Message). Disc-2 analyzes Mariya Takeuchi, whose name is now etched in the "history and hall of fame" of city pop music worldwide. Starting with M-3, which was the inspiration for "September" by Takashi Matsumoto and Tetsuji Hayashi, and M-4, which greatly contributed to her authorship, leaving behind many masterpieces of triplet ballads, we have selected songs from her two albums that contain many cover songs, focusing on their original compositions. In particular, for the well-known covers of Beatles' songs, various versions were prepared without sticking to their originals. The closing song is M-27, which features the beautiful melody and harmony that Eiichi Otaki and Tatsuro Yamashita loved to listen to. Planning: Seiichi Yamamoto Song selection & supervision: Masayuki Ishiura *This work does not include the works of the three artists themselves. Commentary: Masayuki Ishiura
