Evgeny Svetlanov (1928-2002) is one of the leading conductors of the 20th century. In 1965, he became the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Russian State Symphony Orchestra (formerly the USSR State Symphony Orchestra), a position he held for 35 years, and was instrumental in the orchestra's development. He has devoted 35 years to the development of the orchestra. The concert, held in the magnificent Tchaikovsky Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, celebrated Svetlanov's 85th birthday with an outstanding lineup of soloists including Bronfman on piano, Leiferkus on baritone, and Grivnov on tenor. Jurovski, who has served as artistic director and principal conductor since 2011, has put it all together. The works chosen are all beloved by Svetlanov, especially Rachmaninoff's "The Bells," which Svetlanov chose for his final exam at the Moscow Conservatory and also performed two weeks before his death, marking the first and last important repertoire of his career.
