Es war einmal... Once upon a time" is the opening line of a fairy tale. Inspired by these words, Schumann composed the Trio, which is also titled "Fairy Tale". The four movements, in which the same theme is developed, are filled with a sense of hidden tenderness, just as in the style of Schumann in his later years. Wittmann, one of the best clarinetists and composers of our time, re-creates Schumann's world as a new fairy tale for the 21st century. It is an interesting work with a very modern sense of anxiety and darkness. The other two Schumann works recorded here are also performed wholeheartedly by the virtuoso musicians Tabea Zimmermann and Danesh Varyon, as well as by Wittmann himself. Naxos Japan
