Description:

Anton Ferdinand Tits, a composer born in Germany, went to St. Petersburg in 1771 to serve at the court of Catherine the Great. He is credited with introducing to Russia the string quartet form popular in Vienna at the time, and laying the foundation for the tradition in this country. This disc, which opens with Tits' work and combines Glazunov's "Novelette" and Tchaikovsky's famous "String Quartet No. 1," which includes the beautiful "Andante Cantabile" in the second movement, is truly a "treasure hunt of Russian music.
