Description:

Half a century based at the Village Vanguard! Sad Mel, the greatest big band in the history of jazz. The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra was born on February 7, 1966, at the Village Vanguard, one of the world's foremost jazz venues. This long-selling album is now available on LP! Sad Jones & Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra" (a.k.a. "Sad Mel") was originally contracted to perform only three times, but the popularity of the group led to its continuation. The orchestra has since changed its name to the "Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra" and then to the "Vanguard Jazz Orchestra," and continues to perform every Monday at the Vanguard. In recent years, all of their releases have been nominated for Grammy Awards, and they even won one in 2009. This album is a recording from February 7, 1966, and a performance from a month and a half later, recording the true birth of the orchestra. It is a miraculous work that conveys the excitement and fervor of that time to the present day. Moreover, the recording is a perfect record.Like "Live at Art D'Lugoff's Top of the Gate," it was recorded by Resonance President George Clavin himself, using six microphones for the February recording and ten for the March recording. Not only is the sound quality excellent, but the realism of the recording is outstanding, portraying the charm of the big band. The excitement of experiencing the moment of the band's birth, as well as the sound of the band a month and a half later, and the changes that have taken place, are also worth listening to. Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Hank Jones on piano, Richard Davis on bass, Pepper Adams, Jerome Richardson, Snooki Young, Bob Brookmeyer, and many more. This is a rare record of a band that truly made jazz history in New York and is still active today! The band's performance is a rare record of a band that created the history of jazz in New York and is still active today! This is a coveted album for big band fans and jazz fans alike, now on LP!
