For a band that had temporarily suspended activities, this latest release might be closer to a rebirth than a mere comeback. The California band, which spent the 2010s expressing monochromatic pop-rock melancholy, has rediscovered color—or at least shades of it—in their own sound and completed this new work. Throughout its 15 tracks, ‘(((((ultraSOUND)))))’ reflects the band’s journey to reclaim its own pulse. “There were times when I couldn’t find the words,” says frontman Jesse Rutherford. “I needed an ultrasound to figure out what I was feeling. It was like, literally, only after peering inside could I say, ‘Oh, so this is what was happening.’” The album opens with “HulaGirl.” It depicts a surreal scene in which a Hula Girl doll sways on the dashboard while the protagonist feels like a crash-test dummy—broken, yet alive. “This is a song about second chances,” explains Rutherford. “You’re alive. Get out of bed.” Though they don’t state it explicitly, this overlaps with the band’s own rebirth—the image of them waking up, battered and bruised, and beginning to breathe again. (1/2)
