The complete works of Enescu played by Rudolf Leopold, founding member of the Vienna String Sextet! A collection of all known works for cello and piano by Jorge Enescu, a gifted Romanian composer, violinist, and pianist! The cello is by Rudolf Leopold, a founding member of the Vienna String Sextet and solo cellist of the Vienna Konzentus Musiks, and the piano is by Romanian-born Larka Stilbato, who recorded Enescu's complete works for solo piano. Rudolf Leopold is also known as an arranger, and his reconstruction of R. Strauss' "Metamorphosen" based on the first draft (published by Boosey and Hawkes) has been performed worldwide. What is interesting about Enescu's works for cello and piano is that they all show significant connections to Vienna. It is generally believed that his musical education took place at the Paris Conservatoire, but before that his parents sent 7-year-old Enescu to Vienna to study at the Vienna Conservatory.The first sonata, the Nocturne and Saltarello, and the Allegro in F minor sound like the work of a composer who never left Vienna, even though he composed them in Paris when he was 16 or 17. Like Beethoven and Brahms, Enescu titled his string sonatas "for piano and cello/violin" to emphasize the special role of the piano in chamber music, another indication of his own love for the piano and his Viennese education.
