This is a set of four solo albums by the brilliant Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen for RCA, and it has been a long time since they were released. The Beethoven album is a sequel to a collection of variations that Mustonen recorded for Decca, and in addition to the large-scale Diabelli Variations, it covers his late Sonata No. 30, which has a variation as its last movement, and a number of relatively rare smaller works. Known for his sharp assertiveness and highly individualistic playing, Mustonen's characteristics are on full display, creating a multilayered sound with clear intensity and tonal differences in each note, bringing out the sharpness, speed, and vividness of the works. CDs 3 and 4 contain 12 preludes and fugues from Bach's "The First Book of the Mean Law" and Shostakovich's "24 Preludes and Fugues," respectively, and are combined in ascending semitone steps from C major to B minor. This strong contrast reveals a great Western musical tradition that has lived on in the 200 years separating Bach and Shostakovich.
