Description:
Beethoven's Ninth with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Switzerland's oldest orchestra founded in 1806, and its chief conductor, the up-and-coming James Gaffigan, who has captured the attention of the European musical world. This recording comes on the heels of the success of the 2017 Beethoven and Oliver Schnieder Piano Concerto Complete Performance and Recording "Beethoven Gaffigan, who has been Principal Conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra since 2011, is an accomplished conductor who studied with Zinman in Aspen and has studied in Cleveland and San Francisco as an assistant to Welser-Möst and Tilson Thomas. He has significantly enhanced the reputation of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, which has extended his contract until 2022, as well as his appointments as principal guest conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra (a complete cycle of Prokofiev symphonies is in progress on Challenge Classics) and the Gürzenig Orchestra Cologne. The concept of this album is "revolution," and the first piece is "Prisoners' Chorus" from "Fidelio," composed around the same time as the founding of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. The second piece is Brahms's "Dirge," originally titled "Nanie" and originally written in ancient Rome. The original title is "Nanie," which means a song of lamentation at the time of death in ancient Rome. It was composed for Brahms' friend Henriette Feuerbach, a painter, when she passed away. This piece is also based on a poem by Schiller, and is full of deep compassion. However, it is not only a mourning for the death of a friend, but also a work that expresses the splendor of overcoming obstacles and living life in high spirits. The third piece is the famous "Ninth" in its entirety.Fidelio," which was rewritten three times and was the result of painstaking work, is the only opera that shows the budding of the "Ninth" that followed, and the "Ninth" was also completed after deep anguish. This is an album of great significance, as the program states, "True joy is born out of suffering. Sony Classical has been releasing unique "9th" works in 2018 with the recently announced Basel Chamber Orchestra conducted by Antonini and the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Michael Sanderling, which was released earlier, and this performance by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gaffigan, which actively incorporates period style, This performance by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gaffigan, is a pursuit of the standard Beethoven interpretation that symphony orchestras of the 21st century should strive for.
