This ambitious Bach album by German harpsichordist, conductor, and musicologist Alexander Grichtlik is his second for Deutsche Harmonia Mundi. born in 1980, Grichtlik reconstructs selected works from the Weimar period by various Bach composers, including the Mark Passion and other historical re-performances. His last recording, Bach: Kothener Trauermusik, BWV 244a (item number 8887516422-2), a restoration of the lost Funeral Music for the Marquis Leopold, was based on music from the Matthew Passion and received rave reviews from Bach scholars and other expert press. The two pieces on this album are the "Funeral Music for the Marquis of Leopold. Of the two cantatas included in this album, the score of "The Town of the Fulfilled Praise," BWV 216a was lost, and only the soprano and alto parts had been handed down, and those parts had been missing since 1920. In 2004, it was rediscovered among the belongings of the Japanese pianist Chieko Hara, and was restored, revived, and recorded by Joshua Rifkin. Only the soprano part and the lyrics of BWV210a have survived.Both pieces in this issue are world premiere recordings of Bach's music based on newly discovered materials by Grichtlik and restorations using existing works, and are the result of the latest research currently available.
