The first recording of Hengelbrock's first complete Brahms symphony cycle at the new Elbphilharmonie hall, which will be inaugurated in January 2017. The NDR Elbphilharmonie has changed its name to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in the 2016/17 season, and has been further enriched by the addition of the brilliant Polish conductor Krzysztof Urbanski as principal guest conductor. This album is the first of the complete Brahms symphonies by Thomas Hengelbrock, who has been the principal conductor of the NDR Philharmonic Orchestra since 2011 and has created a sensation in the German music world with his excellent performances. It was recorded during the first recording session held at the Elbphilharmonie prior to the official opening of the Elbphilharmonie.Hamburg is the birthplace of Brahms, and the NDR Erpfilharmonie, founded in 1945 as the Northwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, has maintained a long tradition of Brahms performance under successive chief conductors including Schmidt-Isserstedt, Klaus Tennstedt and Günter Wandt. Hengelbrock also builds on that tradition, bringing his unique period style to Brahms playing with an innovative approach. In May 2016, he held a "Brahms Marathon" at the Hamburg International Music Festival, where he performed four symphonies in one night, making a big splash. On that occasion, he also performed the introduction to the first movement of Symphony No. 4, which was originally written in the autograph score; this release precedes the NDR Elbphil's Japan tour in March 2017 (conducted by Urbanski). The "Elbphilharmonie Hamburg" is a concert hall in the Hafen City district of Hamburg, Germany, where prosecution began in 2007 and was completed in 2016. It was newly built on top of the old "Wharf Warehouse A" and, at 110 meters high, is the tallest building in Hamburg for human habitation. Sony Music
