Description:
Celebrating the New Year with the Vienna Philharmonic’s magnificent waltzes and polkas. This once-in-a-century classical concert reaches the hearts of 400 million people in 80 countries worldwide; this year, maestro Mariss Jansons makes his third appearance in NYC since 2012. The Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert takes place every January 1. It is one of the most famous events in the classical music world—a major event broadcast via TV and radio from Vienna’s iconic Golden Musikverein Hall to more than 80 countries worldwide, reaching an audience of 400 million. With a history spanning more than 75 years since its inception in 1939, this concert features waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family—symbols of Vienna, the city of music—and its exorbitantly priced tickets are said to be the hardest to obtain in the world. In 2016, the Latvian maestro Maris Jansons (born 1943) took the podium. He made his debut at the New Year’s Concert in 2006, returned in 2012, and this marks his third appearance—his first in four years. Having studied under Swarowsky and others at the Vienna State Academy, he has deep ties to Vienna; as one of the Vienna Philharmonic’s most important conductors today, he is a regular at their subscription concerts, music festivals, and international tours. Although he has stepped down as music director of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, he enjoys great popularity as chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, one of Germany’s leading ensembles. The program is set to include not only classics such as “The Blue Danube” and the “Rákóczi March” but also works making their debut in the history of the New Year’s Concert. The crystal-clear video and audio offer the luxury of vividly experiencing the musical feast unfolding in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, beautifully adorned with an abundance of flowers. Mariss Jansons was born in Riga, Latvia, in 1943. His father was the legendary conductor Arvid Jansons. He studied violin, piano, and conducting at the Leningrad Conservatory, and later studied under Swarovski in Vienna and Karajan in Salzburg. In 1971, he received the Karajan Foundation’s Conducting Prize and became an assistant conductor with the Leningrad Philharmonic. He has served as principal conductor and music director of the Oslo Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. He is currently principal conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Sony Music
