This is his first album of original music in 10 years, and was written and arranged by Ray Davies. The album was produced by Davis, Guy Massey, and John Jackson. The album is an autobiographical work, following the country and era of America, which has played a very large role in Davis' life. His relationship with the United States runs deep, having toured there early in his career as a member of The Kinks. He was blacklisted by the American Musicians Union for several years, but eventually achieved enough success to play stadium-class venues. Davis has also been based in New York City and New Orleans. And all the while, the United States has been both his muse and his source of consternation. The songs on AMERICANA are steeped in the rich history of American music.Here, American music is reinterpreted through the unique lens of "America as experienced by Ray Davies," and the songs shift in a variety of directions, from the liberating "The Great Highway" to the delicate duet with Karen Grotberg of The Jayhawks, "Message From The Road," the tunes shift in a variety of directions. Meanwhile, "Poetry" reminds us once again that Davis, the songwriter, is capable of elevating the smallest of details into profound insights. The album also frequently narrates excerpts from his memoir AMERICANA, published in 2013. All 15 songs on the album consist entirely of original new material, The Jayhawks were used as the backing band, and the recording was done at Conch, a studio founded by the Kinks in 1973.
