Following Guerrero's collection of religious vocal music, this is the second album for Deutsche Harmonia Mundi by Ensemble La Sestina, an a cappella ensemble that specializes in vocal music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and contains religious vocal music by Josquin des Prez and his contemporary composers. Josquin des Prez's works are characterized by clarity of structure, polyphony, shorter and simpler musical phrases, vitality, energy, and attractive expressiveness, and the novelty of his musical language has greatly influenced his contemporaries and the next generation of composers. This album focuses on Josquin's work, but also includes beautiful vocal works by Lasso, Palestrina, Morales, and others who were influenced by him.The "Ensemble La Sestina" is known for performing in a circle around conductor Adriano Giardina, singing vocal music from the 15th and 16th centuries with sculpted, shaded expression and thoughtful balance.
