Description:
[Anne-Sophie Mutter: Anne-Sophie Mutter is one of Germany's greatest cello virtuosos of all time, Maximilian Hornung. Maximilian Hornung is one of the most promising cellists of his generation, having won the prestigious German Music Competition at the age of 21. In April 2014, Maximilian Hornung performed with Naoko Kawamura during his first recital tour in Japan, including the Tokyo Spring Music Festival, and was praised for his "extended and rich sound" and "fascinating sound and technique. Hornung is like a musician from another planet. He has the calm confidence of a seasoned virtuoso and the youthful vigor of a rocker, all in one person" (Die Zeit), He is now attracting a great deal of attention in Europe for his outstanding talent as a cellist. In the spring of 2013, Hornung left the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he had been principal cellist, to focus on his solo career. This season, he makes his debut at the Lucerne Festival, with the Czech Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphony, and is artist-in-residence with the Augsburg Philharmonic in his home town. Hornung's new recording is released to commemorate the 150th anniversary of R. Strauss' death. In "Don Quixote," Hornung performs with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the baton of Bernard Haitink. Hornung was the orchestra's principal conductor in December 2012. The solo cellist plays the role of Don Quixote and the solo viola plays the role of his follower Sancho Panza in this colorful symphonic poem based on the classic novel by the Spanish author Cervantes, which depicts "Don Quixote's bloody adventures, retirement and death" in sound. It is a difficult piece that demands great skill and characterization, especially from the solo cello. The coupling is the only cello sonata written by Strauss at the age of 18 or 19. It is a large piece in three movements with many brilliant passages typical of the late Romantic period. <Maximilian Hornung was born in Augsburg, Germany in 1986.He studied cello with Elder Isakadze and David Geringas, won the first prize at the 2007 German Music Competition, and was principal cellist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra until 2013. In 2010, he signed an exclusive contract with Sony Classical and has released three albums. Sony Music
