This 1957 work is a compilation of Davis' music recorded in 1954 as the Miles Davis All-Star Sextet and the Miles Davis Quintet. It features a strong lineup including saxophonist Lucky Thompson, drummer Kenny Clark, and pianist Horace Silver. The title track, a song that was always in rotation at Miles' shows, is a smooth, shimmering example of hard bop blues in the vein of Davis. But the album's next track, "Blue 'N' Boogie," is a flashy, vivacious retort to the chilled-out ease of "Walkin'." And the outstanding final track, "Love Me or Leave Me," is even more blissful in its frenzy.
