Yusef Latif's incorporation of Asian traditions, modes, and instruments into his music resonated with jazz audiences. Perhaps the appeal lay in man's unquenchable desire for mysticism, or perhaps in the endless fascination with the sadness and beauty of minor keys. In any case, there was considerable demand in the late 1950s and early 1960s for a number of recordings that reflected Lateef's fascination with all things Eastern. This work, Eastern Sounds, is one of his best sellers. One of the warmest and most accessible soloists in jazz, Latief is a virtuoso on many unconventional instruments as well as traditional reed instruments. Using only tenor saxophone, flute, and oboe, he creates mystery and exoticism.
