Druken's recording of Theodorakis' powerful work Greek-German pianist Danae Dorken celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Greek composer Theodorakis with an extremely powerful tribute album. After World War II, Greece, the land of myths, was in political turmoil and civil war, and Theodorakis was caught in the middle of it all and suffered greatly. However, his creative activities were vigorous even as a young man, and his Suite No. 1 for Piano and Orchestra, which opens the album, won a gold medal at the Moscow Youth Music Festival in 1957. The president of the jury is Shostakovich, and the jury members include Hans Eisler, Khachaturian, and Martineau, making this a very prestigious competition. The piano concerto "Helicon," composed in 1952, was inspired by the scene of Dionysos spending time with his nymphs on Mount Helicon. The other pieces are piano renditions of popular songs composed by Theodorakis that became hits in Greece, and while the melodies are easy to remember and familiar, they are also thought-provoking, as Theodorakis is inseparable from Greece's postwar history. The binding is in digipack format, and the booklet (English, 20 pages) includes commentary by Dorken and information about Theodorakis himself.
