A varied sound by an ancient instrumental ensemble!
Bach's unfinished magnum opus, "The Technique of Fugue," has been performed in various orders and on various instruments, but here the German old instrument ensemble Il Gusto Barocco offers a unique sound. The ensemble consists of 1 zinc (ancestor of the cornet), 3 trombones, 2 traverso, 2 oboes, 1 bassoon, 2 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 violone, 1 organ, and 1 harpsichord, with the well-known Jörg Halloubek conducting, playing the harpsichord, and arranging the music. The organ is a fine instrument made by Zilberman in 1737, and the harpsichord is a late Baroque North German model by Christian Fuchs from Christian Zell, both of which sound good.
This Halbeck version of the old instrument ensemble version was noticed at the Bavarian music festival "Ansbach-Bach-Week" in the summer of 2023, and the recording was made the following year, 2024, at the Friedenskirche in Ponitz, Thuringia.
The album closes with the chorale "We are in the extreme of difficulty" BWV 668a, which was included at the end of the "Technique of Fugue" publication (first edition), also performed by an ancient instrument ensemble.
The booklet (16 pages in German and English) includes a commentary by Andreas Bomba, music journalist and festival director of the Ansbach-Bach Week since 2006, as well as colorful hand-drawn sketches showing the placement of the musicians in the church during the recording process. The book also includes sketches and other images showing the placement of the musicians in the church during the recording process.
