Description:
A true masterpiece finally available on SACD! One of the ideal forms of Beethoven performance, a world heritage that has reached the realm of the divine! New reissue from the original ETERNA analog tapes. Excellent recording. World's first SACD release! Mastered only in the analog domain and converted directly to DSD! The sixth SACD hybridization of the latest reissue project of the original ETERNA analog tapes in Japan! The world's first SACD release of all nine of Beethoven's symphonies, the supreme masterpieces that Konwitschny recorded with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, is now available as a 5-CD set. The Beethoven performances, which were completed with the concerted efforts of the former East Germany at that time, have been revived in the modern age through the latest reissue technology. The SACD version is not the same as the remastered CD version that was previously released in 2017 for the 70th anniversary of Berlin Classics (Christoph Stickel was the mastering engineer there as well), but the original analog master from ETERNA, mastered in the analog domain from the original analog master tapes. After mastering in the analog domain from tape, we converted directly to DSD for the SACD layer and directly to 96kHz/24bit for the CD layer using the same procedure, so the master is different from the previous version. This time, a new master was created. The performance is of a prestigious quality, based on the expansive sound of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, which was at its peak under Konwitschny's direction at the time. The form of the ideal Beethoven performance in the former East German era is still very attractive today. The music has a clear, straightforward expression that is stress-free, and Konwitschny's attention to detail is overwhelmingly impressive. Although the special recordings are scattered from 1959 to 1961, the orchestra is always in excellent condition, and the chorus in the Ninth shows the high level of East Germany at that time. All the musicians and recording staff, including Peter Dam, who has been the principal horn player since 1959, have worked hard to record the best performances possible, and these recordings are the result. The quality of the recordings is such that it is hard to believe that they were made some 60 years ago, and the high sound quality of these recordings will allow us to feel the warmth and fineness of the Konwitschny's characteristics even more than before.
