Description:
The master Berwaldt and Schoch also participate! The art of Zielitz, a female composer who lived for three centuries until the age of 102, is now revealed! Grete von Zielitz was born in 1899 and died in 2001. She was a witness to history, having lived for three centuries. She was born in Vienna, but lived in Berlin after 1917, where she studied under Schreker, and is said to have attracted attention with her song cycle "Japanese Songs" in 1919, which made her decide to become a composer. This is the only disc of her works to date, making it a very welcome release. Her style has changed over the course of her long life. Japanese Songs" is based on Enderling's solo translation of waka poems by Otomo Iemochi, Izumi-Shikibu, and Saito Mokichi, and has a rich late Romantic style that is very intriguing. The original is accompanied by piano, but here we use the version that the composer himself made for chamber orchestra in the 1980s. Although the music is not particularly Japanese, it is a valuable example of German Japonisme art. The "Violin of Death" for violin, piano, and orchestra is also a later arrangement of a work originally for violin and piano. When her father was seriously ill and dying, she was walking in the mountains and had a vision of the Grim Reaper playing the violin in a tree, and used the melody. It is said that she also wrote the scenario as a ballet. The "Double Concerto for Two Trumpets" was composed for jazz trumpet player Friedrich Kellner and Carol Dawn Reinhardt, who was Zielicz's focus at the time. It is a delightful work that incorporates elements of carioca, cha-cha-cha, and other Latin American rhythms, as well as rock and roll, and is a testament to the breadth and flexibility of Zielicz's style. The album features a crisp performance by Jeroen Berwarz, former principal of the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra, and André Schoch, a player of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra who recently demonstrated his virtuosity during a tour of Japan in November, 2023.
