Description:
On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Bach's death in 2000, the International Bach Academy Stuttgart commissioned four contemporary composers to write Passions in their native languages. Gubaidulina composed the "John Passion" in Russian. It was premiered by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra conducted by Gergiev. After hearing the premiere, Rilling wanted to perform it in German, but the music was so connected to the Russian language that it needed to be revised rather than translated. He encouraged and collaborated with the composer, and in 2006 a new version was completed, which was premiered in Dresden on February 9, 2007. The disc is a revival of the original recording, including the "John's Easter Oratorio," which was commissioned by the Hanover Radio as a sequel to the Passion. On the other hand, the "Mark Passion" by Argentinean conductor Golijov is a work with surprising South American colors, with Latin and Afri-Cuban rhythms appearing in the Spanish language. This live performance of the world premiere by a female conductor from Venezuela, Maria Guinand, attracted so much attention that it was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002 at the time of its release.
