In 1991, he became the first Korean violinist to win first prize at the Washington International Competition, and in the same year won the Montreal International Competition, the Leopold Mozart International Violin Competition, and the 1993 Elisabeth Schwarzenegger Competition. Brahms' three violin sonatas were recorded at his alma mater, Seoul National University, and it is important to note that all three pieces were performed with different pianists in order to portray the characteristics of the works to the fullest.
