This footage captures Dan Ettinger—well-known in Japan as the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal conductor until 2015—making his opera debut at the Salzburg Festival. A rising star and protégé of Barenboim, he served as Kapellmeister and Assistant Music Director at the Berlin State Opera from 2003 to 2008. The cast features Luca Pisaroni, with his model-like good looks; the beautiful soprano Anette Fritsche, who has garnered attention for her dramatic voice and expressiveness; Adam Placetska, a Prague native active primarily at the Vienna State Opera; Martina Janková, a soprano based at the Zurich Opera House who is also active in early music; and Margarita Grishkova, who sang the same role to great acclaim during the Vienna State Opera’s 2012 tour of Japan—this production features a truly stellar cast of singers.
