A mature piano plays! A collection of videos by the great pianist Menahem Pressler, a master pianist born in 1923. He was a founding member of the Beaux Arts Trio for a long time, and since its dissolution in 2008, he has been actively performing concerts around the world as a soloist. This DVD set is a compilation of live performances from 2011-2014, with DVD 1 being the Berlin Philharmonic's Gillvester Concert 2014, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, with the theme of "dance" selected each year for the festive and spectacular concert at the end of 2014. The program included Rameau's Suite from "Elegant Indian Countries," Kodaly's Suite from "Hari Janos," Dvořák's "Slavonic Dances," and Mozart's "Piano Concerto No. 23" with Menahem Pressler as soloist.DVD 2 is Mozart's Piano Concertos with the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Paavo Järvi, performed at the Salle Pleyel in Paris in 2012 and 2014. No. 27 was recorded at a subscription concert of the Orchestre de Paris in October 2012, when Pressler was soon to turn 89 years old. This work, Mozart's last concerto, is a masterpiece of sublime beauty. Pressler's performance is calm, without any sense of artifice, and is poetic and full of flavor. The encore, Debussy's "Moonlight," is also full of delicacy and lyricism, and resonates with the depths of the listener's heart. In addition to Debussy, Beethoven's late sonata No. 31 and Schubert's last sonata are included in the program, which is suitable for a glimpse into the state of his maturity.DVD 4 is a recording of a commemorative concert held at the Salle Pleyel in Paris in November, prior to Pressler's 90th birthday on December 16, 2013. The first to be chosen to perform with him on his big day was the popular French quartet, the Ebène Quartet.
