The first DVD of the explosion of the '89 European tour with an unprecedented system is finally available! The complete version includes Schubert No. 5 by Akiyama and Takemitsu by Ozawa, which were not included on the LD! The video is much more interesting than the sound alone! This is the footage of Seiji Ozawa's second European tour with the Saito Kinen Orchestra in 1989. The "Brahms Symphony No. 4" was previously released on LD, but this time, "Schubert Symphony No. 5" conducted by Kazuyoshi Akiyama and "Takemitsu Toru's November Steps" conducted by Seiji Ozawa, which was not recorded on LD, are also included, allowing you to hear the entire concert held in Frankfurt. The entire concert in Frankfurt can be heard here. The Saito Kinen Orchestra was founded in 1984 by Seiji Ozawa and Kazuyoshi Akiyama to honor the late Hideo Saito (1902-74). The DVD features "Schubert Symphony No. 5" conducted by Kazuyoshi Akiyama, followed by "Takemitsu Toru's November Steps," which was first performed by Seiji Ozawa in 1967 (soloists Katsuya Yokoyama on shakuhachi and Nishiki Tsuruta on biwa accompanied the tour).And "Brahms' Symphony No. 4" was chosen as the main program. The Saito Kinen Orchestra at that time consisted mainly of musicians who had been taught by the late Hideo Saito, and included such domestic and international musicians as Michimasa So, Akiko Aki, and Hamao Fujiwara on violin, Nobuko Imai on viola, Kenichiro Tokunaga and Ko Iwasaki on cello, Shigenori Kudo on flute, and Fumiaki Miyamoto on oboe. The orchestra will be joined by such domestic and international virtuosos as Nobuko Imai on viola, Kenichiro Tokunaga and Ko Iwasaki on cello, Shigenori Kudo on flute and Fumiaki Miyamoto on oboe. In addition, this European tour features guest appearances by Carl Reister (Berlin Philharmonic) on clarinet, Everett Firth (Boston Symphony Orchestra) on timpani, and Sherman Walt (Boston Symphony Orchestra) on bassoon, all of whom were active with top orchestras overseas at the time, and they give superb performances. The audience was enthusiastic on this occasion. The enthusiasm of the audience on this occasion was so great that it confirmed the success of the Saito Kinen Orchestra to this day, making this an impressive performance.This DVD box includes footage of Seiji Ozawa's first appearance at the Waldbuehne in 1993, the 2003 Waldbuehne "Gershwin Night" featuring a trio led by blind jazz pianist Marcus Roberts, the "Karajan Memorial Concert" in Vienna with Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist, and the 2015 & 2016 "Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival" all-Beethoven program. The "Karajan Memorial Concert" of the Berlin Philharmonic's Vienna concert to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Karajan's birth, and the all-Beethoven program of the 2015 & 2016 "Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival" are included, allowing you to enjoy Seiji Ozawa's spectacular activities on film.
