The 2004 6th album by the original death metal masters, Paul Speckmann, who has released works with DEATH STRIKE, ABOMINATION, KRABATHOR, and various other projects in recent years, has been remastered and reissued by VINYL. The album is a diverse work that incorporates elements of death/thrash metal, with occasional punk-like approaches and even country-tinged songs. The album opens with "You'll be blamed," a thrash-leaning tune that combines a catchiness reminiscent of the "Collection of Souls" period with an abomination of aggression. The next song, "Sign Up," is typical old-school thrash, and Paul Speckman's vocals shine through. The Serpents Tongue" and "Whatever, Wherever, Forever" are straight-up death metal, emphasizing speed and weight.The Perfect Family" has the D-beat-leaning MASTER feel of the early albums, while "Pistols, Whips and Coyotes" combines Macabre-esque riffs with relatively simple drum work, giving it a playful punk feel. The punk-leaning elements are also evident in "Rights of Life" and "Envy," which are reminiscent of SODOM from the 1987-1991 period. Another Day in Phoenix" is one of the highlights of the album, and it also features clean vocals. The album's final song, "Ring Of Fire," is a Johnny Cash cover that includes trumpet and is a surprising choice. Spirit of the West" is MASTER's most diverse and surprising work that transcends the boundaries of death/thrash metal, and deserves to be reevaluated as a masterpiece that shows the band's flexibility and spirit of experimentation.
