Here comes Verdi's Requiem by Spanish conductor Jesús López-Cobos, born in 1940! The Requiem was originally written as a collaboration of 13 composers for Rossini's memorial service in 1868, and Verdi was in charge of the last part, "Liberame - Let Me Go," but it was never performed at that time. The entire work was written for Manzoni's death in 1873, and premiered the following year on the first anniversary of his death. Although it is a religious work, it has a truly operatic finish, and the dramatic music of "Dies Ile - The Day of Wrath" in particular has become a "familiar tune" often used in commercials. It is Lopez-Cobos who has gained popularity for his powerful music-making. This Verdi Requiem is a perfect example of his work.The mysterious chorus at the beginning of the first movement is followed by a tremendous torrent of sound that seems to roll down the stairs in the Dies Ile. The recording is not in the best condition, but it is more than enough to give you a moving experience. Naxos Japan
