The debut album by the great American composer Philip Glass. It was first released in 1971 on his own label. The great American composer Philip Glass did not release his first album until he was already in his mid-thirties. This was only made possible because he produced it himself. *Music with Changing Parts* was the first work he released in 1971 on his own label, Chatham Square. At this point, it would still take five more years before the creation of his first opera, *Einstein on the Beach*. However, this album is packed with all of Glass’s talent and musical charm: light, breezy arpeggios; the fusion of electronic and acoustic instruments; long, sustained drones created by the human voice; and ecstatic minimalism. As Glass himself recounts in his memoir *Words Without Music*, he secured a $500 interest-free loan from the Hebrew Free Loan Society (an organization dedicated to assisting immigrants to the United States) to fund the production of this recording. Although Glass himself was merely the grandson of an immigrant, he was not far removed from the society’s founding purpose. This is because *Music with Changing Parts* helped pioneer a new world of sound that would later become known as minimalism. JON GIBSON, DICKIE LANDRY, ART MURPHY, STEVE CHAMBERS, and ROBERT PRADO played the Farfisa organ and woodwind instruments. BARBARA BENARY played the electric violin. Subsequently, the label CHATHAMSQUARE released albums by other composers in Glass’s circle, including JONGIBSON and DICKIELANDRY. The label was named after the Manhattan intersection where LANDRY had his studio and where the ensemble held rehearsals. First vinyl reissue. (From the manufacturer’s information)
