Apollo's Cabinet, Alexander Armstrong
Description:
A Baroque musical journey following the travels of Charles Burney! Charles Burney, English organist, music historian, composer, musicologist, and musicologist, made two trips to Europe in 1770 and 1772 to write his "A General History of Music," where he followed the music everywhere from the carnival in Venice to ballets in France, lullabies at the German court, and tavern folk songs in England. He followed the music everywhere and met composers and musicians from eight countries, from the carnivals of Venice to the ballets of France, from the lullabies of German courts to the folk songs of English taverns. This album is a Baroque musical journey that follows Barney's travels, and is a fine project that offers a kaleidoscope of Baroque music from each of the European countries he visited, interspersed with readings from his original 18th century diary. The program includes rarely heard works by Austrian composer Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and Czech composer František Ignáz Antonín Tuma, a new arrangement of Dietrich Buxtehude's "The Cabbage and the Turnip," music from Bach's Goltberg Variations, the "Quodlibet" from Telemann's opera, and the cantata "Shepherd of Despair" (composed by Charles Burney himself and not performed since the 18th century). The collection includes rarely heard works by Tuma, a new arrangement of Dietrich Buxtehude's "Cabbage and Turnips," a new arrangement of Bach's Goltberg Variations to "Quodlibet," opera music by Telemann, and even Charles Burney's own cantata "The Despairing Shepherd" (world premiere recording), composed in the 18th century but never performed since then. and the Maurizio Pratola Competition, Apollo's Cabinet brings historical performances to contemporary listeners in a distinctive style that mixes acting, dance, poetry, and silliness. In addition, they have received the Brian Nisbet Award for their fusion of music and poetry and, more recently, the F. J. Ohman Award at the Beaver International Competition for innovation and new discoveries in baroque music. Tokyo M-Plus
