Keyboardist/composer Baiete, aka Todd Cochran, established himself on the San Francisco music scene playing in Bobby Hutcherson's band before becoming a key member of the innovative band Automatic Man, which he founded with Santana drummer Michael Shreve. He recorded several solo albums for the legendary Prestige jazz label. These albums contain some of the most innovative and futuristic music ever released on this legendary jazz label.His first album, Worlds Around the Sun, received a great response from critics and featured his composition "Free Angela" for the first time. The song was later re-recorded by Santana and widely sampled by artists such as Kendrick Lamar, De La Soul, and Jay Electronica. However, it was on the 1973 album Seeking Other Beauty that his vision fully blossomed. In a note by Pat Thomas accompanying the "Real Gone" reissue, Bayete states.In all that we've done, we've stuck to the blues and jazz aesthetic, but we've left one world behind, stepped into another, and pushed forward into uncharted waters." And they arrived at a dazzling destination that only a very few could reach: Electric Miles in the early '70s is a clear point of compass, but so are Parliament Funkadelic and Ronnie Liston Smith, who, if they had played fuzzed-out clavinets instead of Fender Rhodes, would have been playing the very same thing. playing a clavinet, it must be exactly one of those points. Baiete has since collaborated with artists ranging from Peter Gabriel to Herbie Hancock to Stanley Clarke, and "Seeking Other Beauty" is a true showcase of his work. This is the first reissue of the album, a complete analog release on black vinyl or "plasma" vinyl with an additional insert tape. This recording captures the urgency that people are now feeling again in their attitude, emotion, and performance.If you like music that combines spiritual jazz with fluid, futuristic elements and a variety of influences, such as the Black Jazz label's work reissued on Real Gone, this record is just right.
