Eudora, a Spanish high quality sound label, proudly presents a remarkable album from its SACD and MQA-CD hybrid series, which sheds light on an unknown aspect of Spain's traditional musical heritage. Included in this album are a collection of viola sonatas written by Spanish composers active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. These works are stored in the archives of the Spanish Royal Chapel in Madrid, and have rarely seen the light of day until now. The sonatas are all symbolic of the musical language cultivated in 18th century Bourbon Spain, and are a wonderful group of works that combine the elegance of the Gallant style with the lyricism and rhythmic richness characteristic of Spain. The performance is by Pablo de Pedro, one of the leading violists of our time, who was born in Madrid and has served as principal viola player in such prestigious old music orchestras as the Vienna Konzentus Musiks, Europa Galante, and Collegium Vocale Ghent.Through refined phrasing, lucid style, and a historically informed approach, the Baroque viola brilliantly illuminates the long-dormant and unknown Spanish repertoire.
