Description:

The best Latin reissue recorded in Peru in the 1960s, which was greeted with many surprises last year, has been reissued with a new jacket! The son of Alfredo Valdez, a famous singer, he moved to New York City at the age of 15 with his family. Alfredo Valdez Funiol, aka Al Valdez, is a pianist who has long been active in the U.S. as a pioneer of salsa musicians with roots in Cuban music. This album, "GOZANDO," is a unique work by Alfredo and one of the most famous albums of his career. In 1964, Alfredo accompanied Machito's band on a tour of Colombia and Peru as a pianist, but their manager stole their wages and evaporated. In order to save the Machito band, Alfredo recorded this album for the legendary Peruvian label MAG. Alfredo was not only the arranger and pianist, but also the percussionist, singer, and overall direction of the album. As a result, the repertoire is quite unique, ranging from covers of classic songs such as "Oye Como Va," to songs in the Cuban and New York style such as "Gozalo" and "Que Rico Sabor," which were once included in the compilation, as well as covers of classic Cumbia songs such as "Tabaquera," "Gozalo," "Que Rico Sabor," and "Mambo," and also a cover of a Cumbia classic, "Gozalo," "Gozalo," and "Que Rico Sabor. Tabaquera" as well as a cover of the classic Cumbia song "Tabaquera. The most appealing aspect of this album, however, is the extremely high level of performance, which is hard to believe that it was recorded in such a spur-of-the-moment manner. The sound is so intense that one might almost believe it were a phantom record featuring Charlie Palmieri on piano, Tito Rodriguez on vocals, Cachao on bass, and Tito Puente on timbales. It is surprising that this record was recorded in Peru, unnoticed, with a sound comparable to the top-notch Latin records recorded in Havana or New York at that time. A must have for all Latin music fans and rare groove DJs alike.
