Sébastien Derain, a gem of French ancient music! Sébastien Derain, who graduated with first prize from the Paris Conservatory, where he studied harpsichord and bass continuo with the great Couperin's "Luzon de Tenebré", and was trained by Leonhardt, Anthey, Aspern, Kenneth Gilbert and Rousset, is a rising star in the world of French classical music. He has led Les Nouveaux Caractères, a period orchestra he founded in 2006, in a new recording of François Couperin's "L'Uson de Tenebré", a masterpiece among the "L'Uson de Tenebré" (Recitation of the Dark) with a moving and mournful text taken from Jeremiah's Lamentations. The main vocalists are Caroline Mutel, co-founder of Les Nouveaux Caractères, and Carine Deschaye, who has been with the group since its inception. The project is also the starting point of their activities, as Delain, Mutel, and Deschaye performed Couperin's "Luzon de Tenebré" at their first concert in Versailles about 10 years ago.Three roussons are interspersed with instrumental pieces by Coupland himself and his uncle Louis Coupland to present a sincere, high quality performance of one of the greatest religious vocal works of the French Baroque.
