Description:
The South Dakota Choral Society's second release on the PENTATONE label is a SACD hybrid disc of a prayer mass by the tragic composer Teuberk. Founded in 2009 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a state in the Great Plains of the American Midwest, the South Dakota Choir's second release on the PENTATONE label features two masses by the tragic composer Teuberk. Tuberg, who received his musical education from his parents, first made a name for himself as a violinist. He developed a particularly close friendship with violinist Jan Kubelik (father of Raphael Kubelik). Teuberk composed symphonies and other major works, as well as instrumental and chamber works, and the vocal works included in this album. A talented musician, Teuberk was a victim of the Holocaust and was sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz, where he is believed to have died on December 31, 1944.The two prayerful masses are from the last years of Teuberk's life and are masterpieces by the anguished Teuberk. Brian A. Schmidt, artistic director of the South Dakota Choral Society, is one of the leading choral conductors in the U.S. He has conducted choirs at Duke University Chapel in North Carolina, and his first release on the PENTATONE label, "Chants for Life and Love," (PTC 5186530) is also on sale.
