Description:

Mika Stoltzman Classical Project! World premiere recording of Miho Sazama's Marimba Concerto! Mika Stoltzman, a new genre marimba player who is versatile between classical and jazz, released the classical program "Palimpsest" (PAV2409) on Avie and the jazz program "Tapeleva" (PBR8959) on Big Round Records in 2019 at almost the same time. Not long after the release of "Memories of Tomorrow" (BR8993S) from Big Round Records, Avie is also releasing a new album, "Crossing the Bar"! Crossing the Bar is an album of creative daring by the world's leading marimba virtuoso, Mika Stoltzman. Through original works and arrangements by composers such as Bach, John Zorn, Debussy, and Miho Hasama, Stoltzman delves deep into the world of contemporary classical and jazz sounds. A bold multi-idiom album that demonstrates the limitless possibilities of the contemporary marimba by Mika Stoltzman, who has established a unique position in the music world through creative collaborations that transcend genres. The album opens with a new arrangement of Bach's masterpiece "Chaconne," now for marimba and strings, which was also included in a solo marimba version on her previous album, "Palimpsest. She then moved on to "Breathturn: Part 1" by John Zorn, a composer with whom she frequently collaborates, and here she was joined by her husband, the renowned clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. The enchanting arrangement of Debussy's masterpiece "Dreaming" by Takeshi Fuse is also not to be missed. The most noteworthy is the world premiere recording of "Marimba Concerto No. 1," commissioned by Mika Hazama, a Grammy-nominated composer and compatriot of Mika's. Miho Hazama plays the marimba as well as the clarinet. In this concerto, in which clarinet plays an active role along with marimba, and jazz bass and jazz drums also participate, Mika is joined by her husband Richard, of course, as well as Eddie Gomez and Steve Gadd, both of whom also participated in "Memories of Tomorrow". The elite ensemble, consisting of members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra & Boston Modern Orchestra Project, will be conducted by the composer Miho Sazama herself. Tokyo M-Plus
