Avie's first release title with the eight-voice Proteus Ensemble and conductor Stephen Sherrard. The album provides an overview of a relatively rare selection of part songs from Elgar's choral works, in which he composed part songs throughout his life and imbued each with a unique personality. This is a beautiful collection of Elgar choral works by Stephen Sherrard and his Proteus Ensemble, who claim to have been enchanted by Elgar when he joined the Worcester Cathedral Choir as Alto Ray Clark in 1990. Founded in 2013 by Stephen Sherrard, the Proteus Ensemble is a vocal ensemble made up of professional singers from all over the UK. Named after the Greek god of the sea, Proteus, the group derives its musical raison d'etre from the adjective "protean," meaning versatile and capable of taking many forms, and with flexibility at its core, the group continues its musical journey from prehistoric times to the present.
