Rattle & LSO Bernstein's Wonderful Town, a commemorative recording of Rattle's visit to Japan with the London Symphony Orchestra & the 100th anniversary of Bernstein's birth! On the 100th anniversary of Bernstein's birth, Rattle & LSO will perform Bernstein's famous musical "Wonderful Town". Bernstein first worked with the LSO in 1966, and was also President of the LSO from 1987 until his death in 1990.The LSO has been featuring Bernstein's works, including this Wonderful Town and The Age of Anxiety, since October 2017, ahead of the 100th anniversary of his birth in 2018. Rattle has said that Wonderful Town is a work with all of Bernstein's "character," and that "Ohio" (Why, oh why, oh why ,oh why did I ever leave Ohio?) is the greatest rhyming poem in all of earthly music. Wonderful Town" premiered in 1953 and is a Tony Award-winning classic.It is the story of two sisters from a small town in rural Ohio, whose lives unfold in New York City, their work, and a premonition of love. Rattle chose "Wonderful Town" as the main program for the Berlin Philharmonic's first Gillvester Concert (2002) after assuming the position of Music Director. The performance by the splendid members of the orchestra was a big hit at the time. Fifteen years later, in December 2017, Rattle took up the work again, this time with the LSO. Aspiring writer sister Ruth is played by Danielle de Nice (made famous by her role as Cleopatra in 2005's Glyndebourne). Aspiring actress sister Irene is played by Alicia Amples (Broadway actress, also an accomplished jazz and cabaret singer). Nathan Gunn (a baritone who has also performed at the Metropolitan Opera) will play Baker, the editor to whom Neace brings her manuscript, and the cast is well rounded. The performance was given in a semi-staged format (this disc contains only sound). Rattle and the LSO explode in songs such as "Conga" and "Swing," more than you can imagine.All of the beautiful duets, such as "Ohio," are also flawless, making this the best 100th anniversary present Rattle and the LSO have ever given Bernstein.
