Description:

Gergiev & LSO No hassles! An extraordinary performance and selection of music that will hit the jackpot! Rachmaninoff's "Symphonic Dances" and Stravinsky's "Symphony in Three Movements" Gergiev conducted the LSO in Rachmaninoff's "Symphonic Dances" and Stravinsky's "Symphony in Three Movements," an album recorded live from a concert held in May 2009, The album features a live recording of the concert in May 2009, and is inspired by the theme of the LSO's 2008/09 season program, "Emigre" (Exiles), a combination of works composed while the LSO was away from its native Russia and residing in the United States. The "Symphonic Dances" is the last work by Rachmaninoff, which features quotations from his own works such as the "First Symphony" and "Evening Prayer," as if he was looking back with all his might in the midst of exhaustion due to illness and longing for home. The LSO has performed the "Symphonic Dances" only seven times in its long history, four of which were with Previn on their 1973 U.S. tour. The LSO has also recorded the piece three times: in 1958 with Gusens conducting, in 1974 with Previn conducting, and in 1992 with Wordsworth conducting. The LSO and Gergiev's "Second Symphony," which opened the season in September 2008, is remembered as one of the best performances by the duo, and the "Symphonic Dances," which followed in its footsteps, is expected to be equally excellent. The "Symphony in Three Movements," originally conceived as a "concerto for orchestra," is characterized by its concerto-style sound and formal structure, with piano and harp playing an active role, and at the same time, as Stravinsky himself described it as a "war symphony," the piece is characterized by a style reminiscent of the primitivist era, with its crude rhythms and orchestral roar. At the same time, as Stravinsky himself described it as a "war symphony," it is characterized by a style reminiscent of the primitivist era, with crude rhythms and roaring orchestral sounds that reflect the powerful impact of World War II, which he had experienced through documentary films. Gergiev had already recorded Stravinsky's ballet music with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, such as "The Rite of Spring" and "The Marriage," which share the same primitive tendencies, and the orchestra's meticulous design gave them an overwhelming sound. On the other hand, the LSO first recorded the "Symphony in Three Movements" with Goossens conducting in 1958, more than half a century ago, 12 years after the world premiere in 1946, and the LSO has performed the "Symphony in Three Movements" more than 20 times in all, so the frequency of the performance of this work is rather high. The frequency is rather high. In light of the above, the first Stravinsky concert by Gergiev and the LSO is sure to be an exciting combination, and the level of anticipation should be quite high.
