2021 Salzburg Festival Live Muti's First Attempt! Live performance of "Beethoven's Missa solemnis" by Riccardo Muti and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the Salzburg Festival in 2021. Since Karajan's death in 1989, Riccardo Muti has been entrusted with the Vienna Philharmonic's concerts around the Feast of the Ascension of Mary (August 15). For this popular annual highlight of the Salzburg Festival, Muti, now 80 years old, chose "Beethoven: Missa solemnis" as the program. Muti had been studying the work for more than 50 years, but had never been able to perform it due to its greatness. However, the pandemic of 2020 made it a mission for the musicians to tackle the Missa solemnis, which will be performed for the first time at the Salzburg Festival in 2021.Beethoven's Missa solemnis (Solemn Mass) was written over a period of five years starting in 1819, at the same time he was composing his 9th Symphony. Beethoven began writing this Mass as a celebration of the inauguration of Archduke Rudolf, with whom he had a close friendship, but the idea grew and grew, and in the end, the entire work was not completed in time for the celebration. The completed work is a monumental work of art that combines Catholic liturgy, dramatic expression, contemplative prayer, anthemic expression, archaic elements, and symphonic structure into a single piece, the result of Beethoven's struggle to create a work that transcends the framework of the Mass. The Mass of the Sacramento Mass It is also a work that is known to be extremely difficult to interpret, and therefore requires a conductor of great ability.Rosa Feola, Alisa Kolosova, Dmitry Korchak, and Ildar Abdrazakov, along with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, gave a dense performance of the work, which Muti had long held in awe, and created a brilliant music that expressed the composer's intentions to the fullest.
