Description:

Wagner's last great work, "Parsifal," directed by the late Graham Vick, was performed in Palermo, a city associated with Wagner. The Bayreuth Festival Theatre was given the exclusive rights to perform this work for 30 years after his death (until 1913), and since then it has been performed in theaters around the world. This work, which Wagner himself called "a play of sacred celebration for the stage," is set in the medieval castle of Monsalvat in Spain and tells the story of "salvation" through the "Holy Lance," which is said to have pierced the side of Jesus Christ on the cross during his crucifixion, and the "Holy Grail," which Christ is said to have used for the Last Supper. This release features footage from the January 2020 performance at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Italy. The city of Palermo is associated with "Parsifal," and Wagner completed the work during his extended stay at a hotel in Palermo (Grand Hotel et de Palme) from 1881 to 1882. It was also at this hotel that the painter Renoir, who came to visit Wagner during his stay in Palermo, painted his portrait. The conductor is Omer Meir Werber, a conductor from Israel. He has been Music Director of the Teatro Massimo since the 2020/21 season, making his debut with the challenging "Parsifal". He will also assume the position of Music Director of the Volksoper in Vienna in the 2022/23 season, making him one of the hottest young conductors in the world today. The production will be directed by Graham Vick, a British director active in opera houses around the world. In Japan, Vick has directed "The Prodigal's Destiny" at the Saitokinen Festival Matsumoto in 1995, "Lucia di Lammermoor" at the Opera di Firenze in 1996, "Macbeth" and "Otello" at La Scala in Milan in 2003, and "Nabucco" at the New National Opera in 2013, among others. In 2016, he directed "The Ring of the Nibelung" at the Teatro Massimo, helping to expand the repertoire of German opera, which the Massimo has been actively pursuing in recent years. However, on July 17, 2021, he passed away at the age of 67 from a new type of coronavirus infection. His death will be greatly missed, as he was one of the most active active directors in the world, having been involved in numerous productions. The singers are Julian Hubbard, a tenor based in Dublin, Ireland, in the title role, and Catherine Hunolt, a French soprano who is noted as an excellent Wagnerian singer, as Kundry. Amfortas is Thomas Thomason, who is very active in German opera, and is a very talented singer. King International
