Prokofiev's "The Gambler" is an opera based on Dostoevsky's novel of the same name. The story involves a wealthy old lady who loses all her money in a game of chance, and her nephew, a retired general, his daughter Polina, the marquis to whom she is engaged, and Alexei, who is in love with Polina. Perhaps because the realistic story fits the current times, it is often performed outside of Russia these days. The performance recorded here is from a new production at the Berlin State Opera in 2008, conducted by music director Barenboim. Under the direction of music director Barenboim, the cast is skillfully cast with young, mid-career, and veteran singers, resulting in a fulfilling performance. The production is directed by Cherniakov, whose production of Tchaikovsky's "Evgeny Onegin" at the Bolshoi Opera in Japan in 2009 was extremely well received.The story is completely effortless to modernize, and Cherniakov's unique cool and sharp point of view on the stage makes it exquisitely effective.
