The summer tradition of Verona, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the Arena di Verona Music Festival. Held at the Arena di Verona, the site of an ancient Roman amphitheater, it is the world's largest outdoor opera festival. Held every summer over 10 weeks, the Arena in the city center boasts a capacity of 16,000. Established in 1913, its history spans over 100 years. Opera stars, including Maria Callas, have graced this stage, captivating opera fans worldwide. This time, a box set compiling memorable performances from Verona is being released. First is Puccini's masterpiece Turandot, directed by Franco Zeffirelli [1923-2019], one of the greatest directors of the 20th and 21st centuries.Zeffirelli became famous as the director of the film "Romeo and Juliet," and with his classical yet flamboyant aesthetic, he has directed not only films but also numerous operas. His production of "Turandot," in particular, is legendary for its golden, majestic stage and the splendid ancient Chinese-style costumes. This production was also staged at the Arena di Verona Festival in 2010. The spectacular staging within this grand ancient ruin, lavishly decorating the vast space, is truly exceptional. Anna Netrebko portrays the "Ice Princess" who challenges suitors with riddles, killing those who fail. She captivates this grand theater with her peerless acting skills and extraordinary intensity. Yusif Eyvazov takes on Calaf. In the famous aria "Nessun dorma," he delivers a dramatic performance, making full use of his rich vocal power. Timur is portrayed by the veteran bass Ferruccio Furlanetto. Maria Teresa Leva, born in Reggio Calabria in 1987, takes on the role of Liù. And delivering a powerful, memorable vocal performance as Ping is Gezhim Mishket. This summer's production was a fiery affair, radiating the cast's determination to tackle this renowned production.
