SUPER APES is an Oakland band that has been stirring up the Bay Area guitar rock scene with their rough '90s US indie and punk rock sensibilities, led by MICHAEL CARLSON. The band has been expanding their name in the West Coast indie rock context with their rough and friendly melodies and noise-laden guitars. Their 2025 debut, a 40-minute blast of melodic indie rock, was produced by BRIAN HAMILTON (of FLESHIES fame) and MICHAEL CARLSON, partially occupying the home studio left behind in the California house where GRATEFUL DEAD once lived. The result is a sound that combines the dry air of the U.S. West Coast with the songwriting that is highly acclaimed in local magazines and live venues. The rough guitars and tight rhythm of "Hey! The chorus "ANIMAL", "CARRY ON" with its 90's alterna riff and catchy chorus, "APES IN SPACE" with its twisted chords and humorous chorus, "HALLOWEEN" with its surf punk-leaning beat and disturbing melody, and "NEVER GO HOME" with its earnest singing and rough alternative rock feel. The album is a combination of a guitar band reminiscent of GAS HUFFER and SUPERSUCKERS from the Northwest in the 90's and the playfulness of samples and audio clips reminiscent of HICKEY. The rough distortion and sweet-and-sour melodies of the songs oscillate from song to song, while the choruses of each song make you want to sing along. This is an album that takes the feel of 90's punk swagger and early power pop and reworks it at today's Oakland temperature, reaching listeners looking for lo-fi yet dynamic guitar rock straight from the heart.
