Description:
The Cleveland Orchestra's third self-labeled release of Schnittke Prokofiev's Second Symphony with Bronfman's steel-like piano Schnittke Prokofiev's Second Symphony led by Welser-Möst is a recording of the Corona "Before" (Prokofiev recorded January 2020) and the Corona "After" (Schnittke recorded in October 2020). Prokofiev's Symphony No. 2 is an extremely elaborate composition inspired by the high expectations of machines and industry at the beginning of the 20th century and the ever-changing and growing times. Welser-Möst said of the work, "It is a fascinating reflection on both the world war itself and how it changed the way people thought. It is a very prescient look at modernity and the present, and it shows us the spirit of an expressionist that still moves us deeply today, but also makes us uneasy. From the siren-like opening of the first movement with the winds, the orchestra explodes with virtuosity. The variations in the second movement are also seamlessly developed by the meticulous ensemble. This performance would not have been possible without Mesto's solid leadership and orchestral prowess. Schnittke's Piano Concerto was recorded in October 2020, during the height of the Corona's high alert, as a precursor to the live digital concert series that was to follow. This is the first repertoire for the orchestra.The ensemble of string members in social stance, however, resonates with remarkable focus, thanks to Mesto's leadership and Bronfman's strong desire with the orchestra members to overcome these difficult circumstances.
