Super guitarist=Paul Gilbert Latest solo album in 2 years "Werewolves of Portland" Paul Gilbert, the superb guitarist of MR.BIG and Racer X. Werewolves of Portland" is his 16th original solo album, two years after his last album. Originally scheduled to be recorded with other musicians in the spring of 2020, it was all put on hold due to the Corona Disaster lockdown. With the lockdown continuing unabated, he wondered if there was another way to make the album, and for this album, Paul played not only the guitar, but also all the drums, bass, keyboards, and other instruments himself. Although it is an instrumental album, all of the songs have Paul's own lyrics. Paul explains, "Most of the songwriting process started with singing. I wrote short lyrics and then sang them in various ways to see what melody would come out. If the melody was strong enough to spin around in my head, I picked up the guitar and figured out the chords and groove." He stated.He also commented on the production process: "It was a real pleasure to play these melodies with my guitar as my 'voice'. All of my limitations as a vocalist were removed. I can play higher notes on the guitar! Melodies written for voice have pauses. I really like the sound of that pause when I play the guitar. For a "shredder" like me, the pauses can lead to surprising discoveries! This is a glimpse into his creative process, which is truly a new frontier for him.
