Description:
Queen Zenobia of Palmyra is in love with Arsace, a Persian prince. While they are in the castle, the Roman Emperor Aurelian launches an attack. Arsace confronts Aurelian, but unfortunately, he is defeated and taken prisoner. Aureliano offers Arsace a deal: “If you give up Zenobia and form an alliance with me, I will set you free.” But Arsace refuses, and is sentenced to death. To save her beloved Alsaçe, Zenobia also challenges Aureliano to battle, but she too is swiftly defeated. Then Bubria, the daughter of a Roman general (who is in love with Alsaçe), appears and pleads with the emperor for mercy, as the emotions of various characters become entangled. So, how does the story end? “Aureliano in Palmyra,” said to be the only opera Rossini (1792–1868) wrote specifically with a “castrato” in mind, premiered on December 26, 1813, at La Scala in Milan. It immediately gained enough popularity to be staged at several theaters across Europe; nevertheless, the work subsequently sank into oblivion (Since Rossini reused parts of the music from *Aureliano* in *Tancredi* and *The Barber of Seville*, some of the melodies may sound familiar). Although it is such a hidden masterpiece, the 2014 production in Pesaro undoubtedly gained new popularity thanks to the ideal singers and beautiful stage design. The role of Alsaçe—originally intended for a castrato—is sung by mezzo-soprano Lena Berchia. The brilliance of her tense exchanges with Spires, who plays Aureliano, has been widely praised across the board.
