Description:

First Release! Kemp & Bayreuth 1962 / *Das Rheingold* (2 CDs) Kemp’s 1962 *Ring* cycle from the Bayreuth Festival is now available as a separate release. This live recording of Kempe’s “Ring” cycle—from his second year at the festival—was provided from the well-preserved collection of American mezzo-soprano Grace Hoffman [1921–2008], who also appeared in the role of Fricka in that production, and is believed to be making its debut release. When it comes to postwar “Ring” productions at Bayreuth, the staging by his brother, Wieland Wagner, was consistently used from 1951 to 1958, with conductors including Knappertsbusch, Keilberth, Klaus, and Karajan. After a 1959 season without *The Ring*, a new production of *The Ring* directed by his younger brother, Wolfgang, began in 1960. Rudolf Kempe, who had led the “Ring” at Covent Garden to great success in 1957, was entrusted with this new “Ring,” and he went on to conduct the Bayreuth “Ring” in 1960, 1961, 1962, and 1963—a total of four years. The 1960 “Ring” cycle—from the first year of the series—has already been released, allowing listeners to enjoy the singers’ vibrant performances in a production uniquely characterized by Kempe’s style; however, since this recording was made two years later, differences in the singers and sound quality are worth noting.
